Battery Types

The most common technologies of forklift batteries are lead-acid and lithium-ion. Lead-acid batteries can be further classified as flat plate or tubular, while other types of batteries include nickel-cadmium (NiCd) and hydrogen fuel cells.

Flat plate batteries are a type of lead-acid battery with flat positive and negative plates. They are often used in light to medium-duty applications.

Tubular batteries are another type of lead-acid battery, with a more complex design featuring a series of tubular plates wound in a spiral shape. This design makes them more efficient and longer lasting. Tubular batteries are better for demanding usage in heavy-duty applications.

Lithium-ion batteries are rechargeable batteries that use lithium ions to store and release energy. They are known for their high energy density, longer lifespan, and require less maintenance than lead-acid batteries. Lithium-ion batteries are preferred in applications where weight and space are crucial and where a longer run-time is needed.

Battery Sizes

Forklift battery size, weight, and voltage can vary depending on the type of forklift and its intended use. Electric forklifts use one of five different voltage options at 12v, 24v, 34v, 48v, or 80v.

Larger forklifts and those used for heavy-duty tasks will require larger batteries with higher voltage, while smaller forklifts used for lighter tasks may require smaller batteries with lower voltage.

The capacity of the battery is also an important consideration. Battery capacity is measured in ampere-hours (Ah), which indicates the amount of charge the battery can deliver over a specific period of time. Larger batteries typically have higher capacity, allowing for longer periods of use between charges.

Battery Charging

Forklift battery charges should always match the battery’s voltage and capacity. This helps to ensure safe and efficient charging and prevents damage to the battery.

The battery should be charged frequently, ideally at the end of each shift. The charging time will depend on the type of battery being used. Lead-acid and tubular batteries typically take up to 8 hours to charge and an additional 8 hours to cool down, while lithium-ion batteries take approximately 1-2 hours to charge and do not require a cool-down period. It is important to avoid overcharging the battery, as this can cause damage and reduce the battery’s lifespan.

Regular maintenance is essential to keep the battery in good condition. This includes checking the water levels, cleaning the battery and connectors, and inspecting the battery for any signs of damage or wear.
